Today, December 2nd, is National Day in the United Arab Emirates. Forty-five years ago, the rulers of six emirates came together and decided to unite (Ras Al Khaimah joined a year later). Today, we celebrate the anniversary of the union of the UAE.
Dubai is currently blanketed in red, green, white and black, the colors of the UAE flag. Each color represents traits of the UAE. White is for peace and honesty, red for hardiness, bravery, strength and courage, green for hope, joy, love and optimism and black for the defeat of enemies and strength of mind.
My husband and I originally moved the UAE with a plan of staying here for two years before returning to the states. In those two years abroad in this inspiring country, I found a new home. The UAE has blessed my family and myself with so many opportunities and experiences. I am fortunate to have made friends from all over the world, of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds. I have learned so much about life and truly feel like I am a citizen of the world.
I wanted to create a look today that reflected the beauty of so many women I see in the UAE. After visiting Pakistan, Angelina Jolie eloquently said “The sun doesn’t lose its beauty when covered by clouds. The same way your beauty doesn’t fade when covered by Hijab”. This quote served as my inspiration.
I hope, wherever you are in the world, you take a few minutes out of your schedule today and read about the UAE. This vision of of tolerance, love and acceptance of this innovative country is an example to us all.
