Over the weekend, I attended Mario Dedivanovic's makeup class, aptly titled "The Masterclass" at the Music Hall at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray. Mario is a celebrity makeup artist from New York City best known for his work on Kim Kardashian. He also counts Kate Bosworth, Jennifer Lopez, Chanel Iman and Kelly Ripa as his clients (just to name a few!).
Mario hosts The Masterclass in premiere locations around the world and shares his insights on makeup application and technique, secrets of the trade, makeup tips and tricks as well as stories from his professional experiences in the world of beauty. For this class, he brought someone special who he describes as his muse, Kim Kardashian, to be his model! Kim appeared makeup-free in a white tank top and ripped jeans. Kim initially explained that Mario asked her to wear a tank top so he could demonstrate how he applies makeup to the neck, chest and shoulders as well as the face. Mario and Kim were positioned at the side of the stage, so his makeup application could be viewed on the big screen.
During the class, Mario took Kim from bare faced to natural glam. I was surprised by the heavy amount of foundation and concealer he applied to her face. His methods involve extreme amounts of blending, which he does with a beauty blender sponge. He blends, blends and blends some more to really work the makeup into the skin until it becomes part of the skin. After he is done blending, he buffs the skin with a brush and pressed powder to set the foundation and concealer. Without the buffing technique, he says that the makeup will slide all over the face. Although his makeup looks beautiful in photos and on screen, it is so heavy and thickly applied that it would not be practical for the "everyday woman".
Mario also shared his story as to how he came to be the most sought-after celebrity makeup artist. As a teenager, he worked for Sephora and apprenticed with makeup artists during his free time. With time, he began to assist in applying makeup on models for photo shoots, television personalities and, ultimately, celebrities. His meeting with Kim was a chance encounter. He was called one night to be her makeup artist at a photo shoot the next day and he almost did not take the job! After applying Kim's makeup at the photo shoot, she asked him to take her out shopping so she could buy everything he used on her. She soon began hiring him as her makeup artist and the rest is history!
During The Masterclass, Mario shared some of his tips and tricks. Here are a few of my favorites:
Mario does not use face primers because they create a barrier between the skin and the makeup. He prefers the makeup to blend into the skin. He uses Kiehl's ultra face cream as a moisturizer because it is very emollient. Once it has set into the skin, he applies foundation.
To prime the eyelids, Mario applies concealer to the the lids, followed by Laura Mercier translucent powder. He then uses a cream shadow on the eyelid (once again, lots of blending) and follows with powder shadows.
Mario only likes to use individual lashes when applying falsies (as opposed to strip lashes). He uses medium length lashes across Kim's eyes.
At the end of the class, I took a quick photo with Mario and Kim. I also received a goody bag with over $3,000 worth of makeup and beauty products! Brands such as Anastasia Beverly Hills, Beauty Blender, Yves San Laurent, Benefit Cosmetics and Nivea sponsored products for the event. Take a look below at my swag!
I am glad I attended the class and was able to witness Mario's makeup artistry. I enjoyed hearing about his experiences and personal growth as a makeup artist. I would recommend the class to any makeup artist, beauty blogger or beauty enthusiast who wants to get a taste of the world of makeup and celebrities. Is the class a must do? No, it is not...but I absolutely enjoyed it!
