Is it just me or is the world of beauty constantly buzzing about hyaluronic acid?
Ever since I first heard about this miracle ingredient, I have consciously chosen products containing hyaluronic acid. In a quest to educate myself more in depth about skincare ingredients, I have thoroughly researched hyaluronic acid to truly understand how it benefits the skin.
Here is what I found...
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar in the body. It is a humectant (attracts water) and can hold up to 1,000 times it's weight in water. It is found in joints, eyes, and, most abundantly, between skin cells. In the epidermis, hyaluronic acid attracts and holds onto moisture. This keeps skin soft and dewy.
Young people have a lot of hyaluronic acid, which is why their skin is supple. Natural storage of hyaluronic acid depletes during the aging process. This causes the amount of elastin in the skin to lessen and, subsequently, skin wrinkles and sags. (Think of a grape versus raisin!). Smoking and UV exposure also cause hyaluronic acid to break down (Don't do either of these things!).
Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid in Skincare:
Hyaluronic acid applied topically in skincare products increases skin hydration. It does this by attracting water molecules to the skin cells and holding them there! The moisturized skin is plumper and more elastic, causing pesky fine lines and wrinkles to diminish! Firmer, smoother and more youthful looking skin? Sign me up!
Hyaluronic acid also acts as an antioxidant. It inhibits the production of free radicals caused by UV exposure that ultimately damage the collagen and elastin in skin cells.
What to look for:
Hyaluronic acid is found in many skincare products. It can be applied morning and night and is great for ALL SKIN TYPES!
The hyaluronic acid we use in our skincare products is produced in a lab. There are a few names for hyaluronic acid, however, they all pretty much work the same. When you check out the ingredients lists in products, look for hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate, hydrolysed hyaluronic acid, and sodium acetyl hyaluronate.
